KFC, Pizza Hut hints at pulling down shutters permanently

Due to rising insecurity, Devyani International Nepal that manages international food chains KFC, Pizza Hut and Cream Bell Ice Cream Parlor in the country said that it could pull down its shutters permanently.
"The current situation has become violent and complex, and outsiders as well as some wayward working staff could create chaos as well as vandalise the property leading to an irreparable loss to the restaurant, and the management could be compelled to close the company permanently," it said, adding that the company cannot operate under such a chaotic and anarchical environment.
The international food chain that closed yesterday for an indefinite period due to the working staff's misbehaviour has also said that it cannot pay any kind of salary, allowance or facility for the period of the shutdown as per the principle of 'No Work, No Pay'.
The dispute between employees and employers started after workers tried to register a union. Yesterday, the workers manhandled human resource manager Krishna Prasad Sharma at the Bagmati Zonal Labour Office and assaulted him, bringing him down from his motorcycle and has to be rescued by the police, said the company that employs some 180 Nepalis.
However, All Nepal Revolutionary Hotel and Restaurant Workers Association vice chairman Tika Subedi, who is associated to the CPN-Maoist led by Mohan Baidhya 'Kiran', claimed that the management has unilaterally padlocked the outlets, falsely implicating the union for manhandling the manager to avert the registration of the union.
"After the incident, senior managers of the company have been receiving threatening calls," said Devyani International Nepal that brought KFC and Pizza Hut to Nepal in November 23, 2009, as the first multinational food chain and opened their outlet at the city's posh Kingsway.
The company also opened Pizza Hut Delivery (PHD) at Blue Bird in Tripureshwor, in October 2011, to provide free home delivery service.
Devyani International is an associate company of RJ Corp that has interests in Pepsi — in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mozambique and Morocco, — beer — in India, Nepal, Mauritius — milk — in Uganda — Cream Bell Ice Cream, stem-cell banking and education.
